ICE CREAM

Dripping with sweat, the kids run to the source of sweet tunes. What could it be drawing the kids’ attention in this humid weather? Finally a truck turns the corner with a herd of kids        chasing it. As the truck comes to a stop the large ice cream cone painted on the side becomes visible. The kids go up to the truck and exchange 50 cent for a sweet, cold treat. The kids are pleased with this transaction, but they have no clue about the history of what they are eating.

The time period is between 618 and 907 AD, when Ice cream made from milk is first thought to be eaten by the emperors of the Tang Dynasty.  The Tang Dynasty used various types of milk to make their ice cream such as; goat milk, cow milk, and buffalo milk. They found a plant called Camphor to give their ice cream flavor. In order to freeze their ice cream they found a way to lower the ice cream, which were in metal pipes, into ice pools.

How ice cream came to America is a mystery. The most commonly accepted belief is it arrived by explorers in the 1700s. Around this same time period ice cream became the leading treat.  George Washington was recorded for buying up to $200 in ice cream. Today with ice cream shops such as Sweet frog, ice cream is responsible for 9 percent of America’s cow milk.
